OCEAN CITY, Md. – Visitors heading to the Eastern Shore looking for souvenirs and beach house decor might try stopping at a place that’s just outside Ocean City.
“People that visit Ocean City don’t even realize they’re so close to Delaware. In fact, when they’re here shopping and checking out, they don’t even realize they’ve left Ocean City,” says Amy Vickers, owner of Seaside Country Store on Fenwick Island.
The shop, located on Coastal Highway, is tax-free because it’s just over the Maryland border in Delaware.
Seaside Country Store bills itself as “The most unusual store on the shore,” and it’s been around for more than 40 years. It’s known for its homemade fudge, which has been named the best in Delaware. They’ve got fudge flavors shoppers expect like vanilla, chocolate and maple, but also more unusual kinds like key lime and orange creamsicle.
Vickers says a new flavor offered recently is causing a stir.
“Dark chocolate caramel sea salt. That’s been a big hit.”
Seaside Country Store is also famous for its homemade horseradish cheese spread.
In addition to edible items, the two-level gift shop has sports items, such as Nationals and Redskins gear, women’s clothing and accessories, Coca Cola items, goodies for dog and cat lovers, and even Christmas and Halloween items.
Shoppers will find a massive amount of beach and nautical-themed decor, displayed so they can get a good idea how it might look in their home.
Items include framed prints, signs, mirrors and other wall hangings, candles, glassware, lamps, and those ever-popular Tervis tumblers.
Vickers says she sees generations of families return every summer.
“They come with their mother and their kids and some grandkids, and it’s nice.”
